About my work
My work is a manifestation of empathy, exploring the potential for positive ecological change through the extension of empathy to insects—creatures frequently dismissed or vilified.
I pair highly decorative, celebratory vessels with playfully relatable, nostalgic illustrations, to subvert the traditional Rococo portrait vase and elevate these often-overlooked insects. I’m drawn to lesser-known insects, the ones often seen as unattractive, rather than those more commonly popularized and admired. I lovingly render these creatures with meticulous detail, adorned with gold luster, a material reserved for reverence and prestige. My aim is to combat humanity’s tendency to devalue the existence of insects. Whether it is due to the brief nature of their life cycle, lack of visual flare, or perceived transgression of occupying the same space as a human.
I am interested in the commonalities of shared space, and the futility of trying to eradicate insects from our homes. My work, both functional and decorative, acknowledges that insects are as commonplace in the home as ceramic vessels. I hope to contribute to the unlearning of fear and disgust of insects, and believe in nurturing empathy for all creatures. By starting small—with insects—we can recognize our shared existence and grow greater empathy in our world.
